4. Lockdown Lowdown with... Dave Winter (Part One)

Hope you and the family are doing well. How are you finding the current situation?

We’re good thank you. It’s been strange as I’m sure it has been for everyone but myself and my wife are both key workers so we’ve been busier than usual at work whilst also making sure our own parents are okay. I’ve been getting my exercise in with plenty of dog walking and of course the Mrs has been keeping me busy in the garden!

Are you enjoying the rest from the football or are you missing it?

This is a strange one. Leading up to the games being cancelled, I was very frustrated with football. All of the usual stuff like player availability and some poor results such as the game at home against Brigg.
If I’m honest, I haven’t missed it. I’ve missed being around the lads and the club in general but I’m not missing the actual football.
I wasn’t looking forward to the fixture pile up we had coming our way and I’d about had my fill of officials, especially after reading the referee’s report from our game against Hallam and the nonsense that had been made up! I’m missing football on the TV but have enjoyed being able to catch up with some classic games from back in the day.

What were your thoughts on how the season ended? Do you think it was the right decision?

It’s easy for me to say yes, the correct decisions were made. I don’t think it’s impacted us as much as other teams. I like to think we were safe from relegation and I know for sure we weren’t getting in the top 4 so selfishly; I had no problems with it. Of course my views would be very different if we had been in a different position. At the end of the day we are going through unprecedented times so I’m not certain anyone can claim a right or wrong decision too much.
I’d like to say a big well done though to the NCEL. I feel like what they’ve done for their member clubs is pretty good and I’d now love to see the FA follow suit and look at a way of refunding fines and dismissing any suspensions. Again, there is a counter argument as if we want money back from the FA, are they within their rights to ask for FA Cup and FA Vase money back? That’s a debate for another day.

The FA also delayed their proposed restructure of the non-league system. Some of the rumours had us moving laterally to a more local league or some of our near rivals rejoining the NCEL which would’ve been a big boost to us. Are you disappointed about that?

Obviously the restructure won’t happen now but I’m reluctant to talk about us staying in the NCEL or moving laterally as again, none of us know what may happen with that. We’ve seen enough from the FA over the past few seasons to know things can/will change, even up to the last possible minute. It was no secret that last summer we hoped to move more local again but it wasn’t to be so we just have to get on with whatever comes our way.
