Lee, firstly I hope you and your family are all well. How are you coping with the current situation? How are you keeping busy?
Well it’s not a situation anybody has ever experienced before and I must admit for myself it’s not easy as I like to be keeping busy and doing things. I am currently working from home so that keeps me busy through the day, I have also been trying to do a few things around the house, not that I am any good at things like that but I’m having a go.
Are you missing your football fix on a Saturday?
Yes, of course. I am missing the football but not just that, it’s the banter with the lads as well. Hopefully it won’t be too long until we are back at it
You’ve previously been a manager of clubs at this level, what was it about Ollerton that made you agree to join as an Assistant?
I think the opportunity to work with new people, continue to develop and learn was good for me. I think everybody has strengths and weaknesses in which you want to try and improve on. Winter and Bodle are two different people in which I have enjoyed working with. Ollerton have some people that never get a mention, like a lot of clubs, who work behind the scenes trying to make it as good as it can be for the lads. It’s good that a club understand where they are at and aren’t forever wanting to bring somebody new into the club to see if they can do a better job with peanuts to work with, it simply doesn’t work. Clubs like us will always have to battle against bigger financially capable clubs and it’s just a fact of life. There are clubs in the league below with bigger financial backing so it is tough for us and I don’t say that as though I am resentful of the fact. I feel a lot of people are towards people who have the backing where as I think fair play to them, if you can get it why not use it? We aren’t in that position so we want to create an environment for the lads that means they want to come and play for us and want to learn. We have a lot of young lads that are making the transition into North East Counties football and if they can do that, they will go on to make very successful careers.
What do you make of the league as a whole? Is it competitive or is it easy to predict who will do well?
It’s a very tough league. There are a lot of well drilled teams and just about everybody can beat each other. You normally get a nucleus of 5-6 teams that are fighting it out in the top six but even those teams can get beat.
What are you targets for next season? How far can this team go?
Targets have to be realistic but I feel it depends on how well the young lads adapt. Some have had the experience this year and hopefully they will continue to progress and show a better understanding of what’s expected within the league. We have brought some experience to the team and I have also been talking to some lads for next season that I am hopeful of signing, I know a few lads that will improve us and give us the experience that we need to continue developing the young lads so let’s see what happens there.
Are you confident of keeping this team together?
We are hopeful of keeping the lads together. Obviously if somebody comes and offers daft money to a player, that's a different story. But if that doesn’t happen then we are hoping to keep the lads together and maybe add to it a little for next season.
Finally, who is angrier on the touch line, you or Dave?
I didn’t think I could be beat but Dave is definitely the angrier, haha.
