For a brief spell, it looked like Ollerton Town may be upsetting the league table as they went ahead against Doncaster City on Saturday afternoon. However, in the end, despite a spirited display by the Town, David would not slay Goliath and the title-chasers came back to secure a 4-2 victory.
After an equally fought opening, Ollerton took the lead inside the 12th minute. Niall Mooney picked up a loose ball 30 yards out and drove towards goal, before slipping in Adam Scott who calmly finished into the corner.
But the lead could only last into the 25th minute, when a cross into the box was diverted into the far corner by a glanced header from Jock Curran.
That was the last of the goals in what was a stop-start first half, dictated by a referee who was looking to ensure he dominated proceedings, rather than letting the game flow.
In the 49th minute, Ollerton youngster tried his luck with an audacious effort from long range, but it dropped wide of the target.
Then a minute later, Doncaster City got a stroke of luck to take the lead. Jordan Turner's shot was tipped onto the far post by 'keeper Gareth Briggs, but the ball rebounded across the line and struck the other post, with recovering defender Sonny Bennett just unable to stop it from dropping over the line.
Turner has an incredible goalscoring record so far this season, averaging over two goals a game, and he could've added another in the 52nd minute but the ball bounced up unkindly and he skewed a shot wide of the target.
Ollerton responded and after good link up play between Wilkinson and Harvey Limb, Limb sent a tame shot towards goal which was easily saved.
In the 70th minute, Ollerton spurned a big chance to draw level. Wilkinson beat the City 'keeper to a long ball over the top, and sent a lobbed shot over him, but it dropped wide of the target.
Ten minutes later, Ashley McEwan's cross-cum-shot looked like it maybe dropping into the far corner, but it landed onto the roof of the net.
Seconds later, Doncaster City added a third to seal the win. The visitors exploited a gap in the Ollerton defence to send Jack McKay clear inside the area, and he calmly slotted into the back of the net.
Five minutes before the end, Ollerton sent Freddie Norris clear on goal one v one, but he was unable to dispatch the opportunity, with the 'keeper rushing off his line to smother the ball.
In the dying embers of the game, both teams would score again.
The first went to Doncaster City. McKay saw his effort saved well by Briggs, but the ball dropped kindly to him, and he was able to pass across the box to Turner who tapped in his 31st goal of the campaign to make it 4-1.
Ollerton pushed forward one last time and managed to add a second goal. Wilkinson was clearly hauled to the ground inside the area, leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot, and McEwan stepped up to calmly send the 'keeper the wrong way.
