An 87th minute goal by midfielder Joe Lumley proved decisive as Ollerton Town defeated promotion-chasing Horbury Town by the solitary goal on Saturday, to record their second successive victory and clean sheet.
After a run of five defeats, Ollerton bounced back last week to defeat Selby Town 2-0 on the road and returning to home soil, they were able to follow that up with a battling display against a talented Horbury side.
It was a tense, closely fought opening quarter of an hour to the game but it didn't take long for the chances to start arriving.
In the 17th minute, the ball broke kindly to Lewis Bingham inside the Horbury area but he fired over the bar.
At the other end, Samuel Kyeremeh saw an effort saved well by the legs of Owen Evans before Robert Evans wasted a good opportunity, firing wide of the Ollerton goal.
Ben Agu was next to try his luck for the visitors, but his curling effort was easily dealt with by Evans.
The best chance of the game so far arrived in the 28th minute as Ollerton hit the woodwork. Bingham's flicked pass played Adam Scott in on goal inside the area but the ball bobbled awkwardly as he went to strike it, meaning his shot beat Elliot Lightowler but not the post.
Four minutes later and Ollerton had another good chance to take the lead. Jake Squires' long throw was flicked on at the near post by George Slack towards Bingham, who hooked a half volley over the bar.
The Ollerton pressure continued and Scott's cross-cum-shot towards the back post was just off target, and narrowly ahead of the onrushing Sam Geeves.
With ten minutes to go until half time, Horbury had the ball in the back of the net, Gibril Bojang tapping in after Luke Playford's initial effort hit the post, but the celebrations were short-lived as the goal was ruled out for offside.
The game continued at an exciting pace with both teams creating chances. In the 42nd minute, Ollerton had another big chance as Bingham and Scott combined once again. It was the former who raced towards the byline, skipping past a defender before pulling the ball back for Scott but his effort from a central position went wide.
Before the half time break there was still time for Scott to force Lightowler into a good save low down to his right with a well-struck free kick from 25 yards.
Within minutes of the restart, Ollerton hit the woodwork once again. Squires brought the ball down well on the edge of the area, held off his man and ran into space before sending a rasping drive at goal which struck the stanchion. The ball dropped to Bingham but he dragged the rebound wide.
In the 58th minute, Agu sent a free kick towards the Ollerton goal but Evans got down well to tip the ball wide for a corner.
Both sides were pushing for the opener and both got close to finding it. For Ollerton, Bingham's header from Lewis Murr's free kick was almost spilt into his own net by the substitute Horbury 'keeper, before the visitors broke and Evans produced a superb save to tip Charlie Stephens' shot onto the post.
Ollerton gave a debut to new signing Brandon Burke, and the former Frickley forward almost marked the occasion with a goal but his effort, created from a Squires long throw, was easily saved.
With 15 minutes to go, Ollerton survived a big scare which would give them the platform to go on and secure the win later in the game. Stephens' shot looked destined for the back of the net but Geeves recovered brilliantly to get back and hook the ball of the line to keep the score at 0-0.
Horbury were then given a free kick in a dangerous area, close to the edge of the box, but James Cusworth's attempt lacked the pace to seriously test Evans.
An Ollerton corner created an opportunity for defender George Slack at the far post but he headed over the bar.
Time was running out and Ollerton full back Lewis Murr did brilliantly to wriggle into the area, creating space, before striking at goal and seeing his effort tipped wide, though the three officials missed the contact from the goalkeeper and awarded a goal kick.
Finally, with just three minutes of normal time remaining, the winning goal arrived. Joe Lumley was fed the ball on the edge of the box and quick thinking and quick feet saw him get past his man before he composed himself and poked the ball into the bottom corner, leading to scenes of wild celebration from the Ollerton players and home crowd.
